Novelty Socks: How to Organise Your Sock Drawer to Spark Joy

More often than not, we don’t give our socks enough attention and either crumple them in a ball or throw them in the sock drawer, which is probably already overflowing. Some of them might be missing their mate, too. Sounds familiar? Not to worry, we don’t judge. In fact, we want you to know that you’re not alone. We have way too many socks to count, and some days really are busier than others. But believe us when we say that there’s no greater pleasure than seeing your socks organised, and it doesn’t even take that much effort.

By the end of this post, you’ll know exactly how to store all your cool socks in such a way that you won’t be able to take your eyes off them. If you’re ready to organise your sock drawer, continue reading because, below, you’ll find some steps that we’ve found incredibly useful.

Step 1. Find the matches and separate the singles

The first step would be to pair up all the matches and move the singles aside. This will make the whole process much easier. If you’ve already looked everywhere and couldn't find their match, it's time to say your goodbyes and let them go.

Pro tip: You can use your partnerless sock as a cloth for cleaning purposes, to keep your board game pieces together, or even as a sleeve for your hot beverages.

Step 2. Go full Marie Kondo on your socks

Now, we're warning you - this is not an easy step. If you haven't heard of Marie Kondo before, here’s the low-down. Her method of tidying up has helped millions around the world get rid of items that don't spark joy anymore. This step involves you taking a good look at all of your pairs and giving up those you haven't worn in a long time, and that don’t evoke joy in you when you hold them. We know, we know… we said it wouldn’t be easy.

Step 3. It’s time to start folding!

Now, this part might be your least favourite, but it absolutely needs to get done. Well, if you want to save time in the mornings and get extra space, of course. You can use different folding methods and find the best one for you. Here are two to consider:

● The square method. Lay your socks into a cross shape with heels looking up, and then tuck the toe parts underneath after folding the toe ends over. It may sound way too complex, but it looks great.

● The KonMari method. Place your socks on top of one another, visually divide the socks into equal parts. Fold them into fifths if these are knee-high socks, fourths if they are mid-length socks, or thirds if they are short socks. Place them in the drawer in an upright position, and you’re done.

Fun fact: Although flipping the elastic part over the entire sock does keep your pairs together, it causes socks to wear out faster because the elastic stretches over time.
